Chaconne for the left hand from Partita No. 2 in D minor,
BWV 1004 by Bach

The 27th season of Avedis opens with our annual Bach and Friends program. Vivaldi sets the tone with his lively Concerto for flute, violin, bassoon and piano, followed by Bach's magnificent Trio Sonata for flute, violin and piano. Tenor Michael Dailey from Opera San Jose returns for the 2nd year to sing two contrasting cantata arias. Brahms commented that "a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings" are contained in Bach's inspiring Chaconne that he arranged for piano left hand. The fourth Brandenburg Concerto provides a joyous conclusion.

Eric Ewazen – Roaring Fork
Vincent d’Indy – Chanson et Danses, Op. 50
Arturo Márquez – Danza de Mediodia
Leos Janácek – Mladi

The March 4 concert features the return to the Bay Area of clarinetist Greg Dufford, a founding member of the SWQ, now living in Colorado. He will join the quintet for Janacek's brilliant sextet Mladi (Youth) written in the composer's 70th year and in the charming French Chanson et Danses of Vincent d'Indy. American composer Eric Ewazen's Roaring Fork quintet evokes the beauty of the Rocky Mountains as contrasted with Mexican composer Arturo Marquez' Danza de Mediodia depicting Latin American dance styles.

Jean-Michel Damase – Trio for flute, viola, harp
John Corigliano – Voyage
Joseph Jongen – Concert à Cinq

The April 22 concert features works with harp, flute and strings in a program of French and American music. The ebullient Quintet of Robert Baksa contrasts with the lush sonority of John Corigliano's Voyage based on a Baudelaire poem. The elegant French style of Damase's trio for flute, viola and harp balances with the Spanish flavor of Jongen's rousing quintet.
